Sonny James (born May 1, 1929, as James Hugh Loden) was an American country music singer and songwriter best known for his 1957 hit, “Young Love”. Biography James was born in Hackleburg, Alabama. He was the youngest of seven children. His father died when he was four years old, and his mother remarried. James had a difficult childhood and was often teased by his older siblings. He dropped out of school in the ninth grade and went to work in a cotton mill. He later joined the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. After his discharge, he returned to Hackleburg and began playing guitar and singing in local clubs.
He soon began touring with a band called the Southern Gentlemen. In 1956, he recorded a song called “That’s Me Without You” for the Dixie label. The song became a minor hit, and James began to be noticed by other record labels. In 1957, he signed with Capitol Records and recorded “Young Love”, which became his biggest hit. The song reached #1 on the Billboard country chart and #5 on the pop chart. It sold over two million copies and was awarded a gold disc. James continued to have success with such hits as “Empty Arms””, “Running Bear”, and “The Minute You’re Gone”.
He also appeared in several movies, including “The Singing Marine” (1957) and “Roustabout” (1964). In 1971, he retired from the music business and became a born-again Christian. He later opened a Christian youth center in Nashville, Tennessee. James died on February 22, 2016, at the age of 87.
