Silas Weir Mitchell was born on January 15, 1829, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, John Mitchell, was a successful merchant and his mother, Sarah Weir, was the daughter of a wealthy Quaker family. Silas was the oldest of seven children. He was educated at the prestigious Philadelphia Academy and then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1850.
Mitchell began his medical career working at a hospital in Philadelphia. He then moved to New York City, where he worked as a physician for several years. In 1858, he returned to Philadelphia and opened his own medical practice.
Mitchell became interested in the treatment of nervous disorders and began to specialize in this area of medicine. He developed a new treatment for hysteria, which he called the “rest cure.” This treatment involved putting patients in a dark room and restricting their diet. Mitchell believed that this treatment would help to calm the nerves and restore the patient’s health.
The rest cure proved to be very successful and Mitchell became well-known for his work in this area. He wrote several books on the subject, including “Injuries of the Nervous System” (1872) and “Fat and Blood” (1884).
In 1887, Mitchell founded the Philadelphia Neurological Society. This organization was dedicated to the study of nervous disorders and to the development of new treatments for these conditions.
Mitchell continued to work as a physician until his retirement in 1909. He died on January 23, 1914, at the age of 85.
During his career, Mitchell made many important contributions to the field of medicine. He was a pioneer in the treatment of nervous disorders and helped to develop new methods for treating these conditions. His work had a significant impact on the medical profession and helped to improve the lives of many people who suffered from nervous disorders.

The way I tend to look at what goes on in that world, not to sound high-faluting, forgive me, but it's sort of psycho-mythological in a lot of ways. I think a lot of mythology is meaningful to us as humans because it puts psychological forms in a kind of an organization that we can understand. -On studying religion for roles like Monroe in Grimm (2011).

I play outsiders. That's just the way it's gone for me, and I think that's fantastic. I like it because I've always been interested in how the other guy thinks. I want to know what's going on in his head. You see people on the street, talking to themselves, and you're like, "What are they talking about?" I'm interested in that. Even people that are speaking in tongues are interesting. What's going on there? What's channeling through there? I'm definitely interested in that. When I was in college, I said, "In Sam Shepard's world, I am the main guy. But, in the normal world, I am the other guy." It requires a certain kind of world for me to live in, as the main guy. The fun thing about Monroe is that he could really go anywhere. He is a complex dude.
