Sandra Denton, better known as Pepa, is a Jamaican-American rapper and actress. She is best known as a member of the hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa.
Pepa was born in Kingston, Jamaica on November 9, 1964. Her family moved to Brooklyn, New York when she was a child. Pepa attended Brooklyn College.
Pepa began her career as a rapper in the early 1980s. She met Cheryl James, also known as Salt, at a party in Queens. The two women formed the group Salt-N-Pepa and released their debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, in 1986. The album was a critical and commercial success, and the group became one of the first all-female rap groups to achieve mainstream success.
Salt-N-Pepa released several more albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including A Salt with a Deadly Pepa (1988), Blacks’ Magic (1990), Very Necessary (1993), and Brand New (1997). The group also found success with their singles “Push It,” “Shoop,” and “Whatta Man.”
Pepa also appeared on the television show Yo! MTV Raps and starred in the film Who’s the Man? (1993).
