Sam Donaldson is an American journalist and television news anchor, best known for his work with ABC News. He was born on March 11, 1934 in El Paso, Texas, the son of Sarah Jane (née Morris) and Samuel Andrew Donaldson, Sr. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Sarah and Elizabeth.
Donaldson was educated at El Paso High School and then at Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1956. He began his career in radio, working as a reporter and newscaster at KROD-AM in El Paso. He then moved to KRLD-AM in Dallas, where he worked as a reporter and newscaster.
In 1960, Donaldson joined ABC News as a radio correspondent. He soon moved to television, and became ABC’s White House Correspondent in 1963. He covered the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. He also served as ABC’s Chief Washington Correspondent and as co-anchor of Primetime Live.
Donaldson has won numerous awards for his work, including three Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award, and the George Polk Award. He was inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2003.
Donaldson has been married three times. His first marriage, to Lois Hart, ended in divorce. He then married Janice Treadwell in 1967; the couple had two children before divorcing in 1977. Donaldson married his third wife, Susan Deveny, in 1987; the couple has one child.
