Sally Jewell is an American business executive and former United States Secretary of the Interior. She was born in London, England, on February 11, 1956, to an American father and a British mother. Jewell’s family moved to Seattle, Washington, when she was four years old. She attended public schools in Seattle, graduating from Nathan Hale High School in 1974. Jewell then enrolled at the University of Washington, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in geology in 1978.

After graduation, Jewell began her career as an engineer with Mobil Oil Corporation in Denver, Colorado. In 1980, she returned to Seattle to work for Rainier Bank (now KeyBank) as a commercial banker. In 1988, Jewell left banking to co-found Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI), a retailer specializing in outdoor gear and apparel. Jewell served as REI’s CEO from 2005 until her resignation in 2015, when she was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as Secretary of the Interior.

Jewell was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 8, 2013, and sworn in the following day. As Secretary of the Interior, Jewell oversaw the management of America’s public lands and natural resources, including national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. She also worked to expand access to outdoor recreation opportunities for all Americans. Jewell resigned from her position as Secretary of the Interior on January 20, 2017, after President Donald Trump took office.

Jewell has been married to Warren Jewell since 1978. The couple has two children.

In 2018, Jewell was appointed as a visiting fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. She is also a member of the board of directors of The Nature Conservancy and the National Park Foundation.
