Ronald Searle was born on March 3, 1920, in Cambridge, England. His parents were both teachers. He had two sisters. Searle was educated at the Cambridge School of Art. He began his career as a cartoonist for the British Army during World War II.

After the war, he worked for several British newspapers, including The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times. In the 1950s, Searle moved to France, where he worked for Paris Match and Le Monde. He also did illustrations for Life magazine. Searle is best known for his work on the satirical magazine Private Eye.

He also created the characters of St Trinians and Molesworth. Searle was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1986. He died on December 30, 2011, at the age of 91. ..
