Roger Daltrey, CBE is an English singer, songwriter, actor and film producer. He is the founder and lead singer of the rock band The Who, which released fourteen singles that reached the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and United States, including “I Can’t Explain”, “My Generation”, “Substitute”, “I’m a Boy”, “Happy Jack”, “Pictures of Lily”, “I Can See for Miles”, “Pinball Wizard”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, and “You Better You Bet”.
Daltrey began his career in 1957 as a member of the Detours, a band formed to play rock and roll at local youth clubs. He was the group’s original lead singer, but left in 1959 to complete his National Service with the Royal Air Force. He rejoined the Detours in 1963, and the band evolved into The Who. He has also been an actor and film producer, with roles in films including Tommy (1975) and McVicar (1980).
Daltrey has been married twice, first to Jackie Lane from 1960 to 1969, and then to Heather Taylor from 1971 to present. He has four children from his first marriage, and one from his second.
Daltrey was born on 1 March 1944, in East Acton, London. His father, Harry, was a bus driver for London Transport, and his mother, Irene (née Walters), was a homemaker. He has one younger sister, Gillian. His parents were working class Londoners who had little money for luxuries; Daltrey recalls having to make his own clothes from scraps of material.
Daltrey’s parents encouraged his interest in music; he attended Acton County Grammar School from 1955 to 1960, where he played clarinet in the school orchestra and sang in the choir. He also showed an interest in acting; he was a member of the school’s drama society and appeared in several school productions. In 1957, he joined the Detours, a band formed by schoolfriends Pete Townshend and John Entwistle to play rock and roll at local youth clubs. Daltrey was the group’s original lead singer; his powerful voice attracted attention from other bands and helped the Detours secure bookings at a number of London clubs.
In 1959, Daltrey left the Detours to complete his National Service with the Royal Air Force. He rejoined the band in 1963, after they had changed their name to The Who. The Who released their debut album My Generation in 1965; the album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the UK charts and number three on the US Billboard 200. The album included the single “I Can’t Explain”, which reached number eight on the UK charts.
The Who achieved international success with their next album, 1966’s A Quick One, which reached number four on the UK charts and number seventeen on the US Billboard 200. The album included the singles “Substitute” and “I’m a Boy”, both of which reached the Top 10 in the UK. The band’s third album, 1967’s The Who Sell Out, was another critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the UK charts and number thirteen on the US Billboard 200. The album included the singles “Happy Jack” and “Pictures of Lily”, both of which reached the Top 10 in the UK.
The Who’s fourth album, 1968’s Magic Bus: The Who on Tour, was a live album recorded during the band’s 1967 US tour. The album reached number five on the UK charts and number twenty-four on the US Billboard 200.
The band’s fifth album, 1969’s Tommy, was a concept album about a “deaf, dumb and blind” boy who becomes a pinball champion. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number four on the UK charts and number two on the US Billboard 200. The album included the singles “Pinball Wizard” and “I Can See for Miles”, both of which reached the Top 10 in the UK. Tommy was later adapted into a film (1975) and a Broadway musical (1993).
The Who’s sixth album, 1970’s Who’s Next, was another critical and commercial success, reaching number one on the UK charts and number six on the US Billboard 200. The album included the single “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, which reached number nine on the UK charts.
The band’s seventh album, 1971’s Quadrophenia, was another concept album, this time about a mod named Jimmy. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the UK charts and number seven on the US Billboard 200. The album included the single “You Better You Bet”, which reached number sixteen on the UK charts. Quadrophenia was later adapted into a film (1979) and a Broadway musical (1993).
The Who’s eighth album, 1973’s Odds & Sods, was a collection of outtakes and previously unreleased tracks. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number three on the UK charts and number forty-one on the US Billboard 200.
The band’s ninth album, 1974’s It’s Hard, was another critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the UK charts and number thirteen on the US Billboard 200. The album included the single “Eminence Front”, which reached number twelve on the UK charts.
The band’s tenth album, 1976’s The Kids Are Alright, was a documentary about The Who featuring previously unreleased live footage and new interviews with band members. The film was a critical and commercial success; it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song Score or Adaptation Score.
The Who’s eleventh album, 1978’s Who Are You?, was their last studio album with Keith Moon; Moon died shortly after its release. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the UK charts and number four on the US Billboard 200. The album included the single “Who Are You?”, which reached number fourteen on the UK charts.
The band’s twelfth album, 1980’s Face Dances, was their first without Moon; Kenney Jones replaced him as drummer. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the UK charts and number five on the US Billboard 200. The album included the single “You Better You Bet”, which reached number eleven on the UK charts.
The Who’s thirteenth album, 1982’s It’s Hard, was another critical and commercial success, reaching number two on both the UK and US charts. The album included the single “Eminence Front”, which reached number twelve on both the UK and US charts.
The band’s fourteenth album, 2006’s Endless Wire, was their first studio album in twenty-four years; it reached number three on both the UK and US charts. The album included the single “You Better You Bet”, which reached number eleven on both the UK and US charts. Endless Wire was followed by another successful tour; The Who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
Daltrey has been married twice: first to Jackie Lane from 1960 to 1969; they had four children together – Simon (born 1961), Louise (born 1963), Paul (born 1965), and Willow (born 1968). Daltrey married Heather Taylor in 1971; they have one child together – Jamie (born 1972). Quotes

---|---|
1 | [on recovering from throat surgery] I got depressed after surgery, during what I call the big silence, that's when I realized what it would be like to not have a voice. I had two weeks of silence. Silence and no drinking. How's that for a good Christmas? So, you know, it was the strangest Christmas I've ever had. |
2 | [on Freddie Mercury] When we lost Freddie, we not only lost a great personality, a man with a great sense of humor, a true showman, but we lost probably the best, the best virtuoso rock 'n' roll singer of all time. He could sing anything in any style. He could change his style from line to line and, God, that's an art. And he was brilliant at it. |
3 | I'm a rock god?! I'm five foot seven. I had me jaw broken, and so my chin stuck way out. That's how I became tough - I learned to pick up anything and fight back ... A rock god! |
4 | [To the audience at Boston's Beer Garden, USA, on Monday, December 3rd ] About ten hours ago this gig was absolutely fucking impossible. So this one's for the filth - or whatever you like to call 'em - the police in Montréal. We're 'ere and it's good to be 'ere and this one's for them: "Won't Get Fooled Again". [The previous night in Montréal, December 2nd, 1973, they'd been arrested and bailed for the destruction of a hotels facilities] |
5 | Rock used to be a right laugh. The trouble is the rock press have made it all so serious. Fifty per cent of rock is having a good time. |
6 | I don't want to stop and I don't think Pete (Pete Townshend) does. We're at the pinnacle of our decline. |
7 | Of course, chicks keep popping up. When you're in a hotel, a pretty young lady makes life bearable. |
8 | You know, I was a school rebel. Whatever they said do, I didn't do. I was totally anti-everything. I was a right bastard, a right hard nut. I just totally closed the doors to ever wanting to know what they had to teach me. Rock & roll was the only thing I wanted to get into. |
9 | [on The Who's performance at Woodstock] It was the worst gig we ever played. |
10 | I don't have any illusions anymore. The illusion that rock 'n' roll could change anything - I don't believe that. I've changed. Who would have ever thought that I'd end up saying that I want to be an all-around entertainer? But that's what I want to be. |
