Robert Kuok Hock Nien is a Malaysian Chinese business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He is the founder and chairman of the Kuok Group, one of Asia’s largest conglomerates with interests in palm oil, shipping, real estate, hospitality, media, and commodities trading. Forbes magazine estimates his net worth to be US$12.9 billion as of March 2019, making him the richest person in Malaysia and the 30th richest person in the world.
Kuok was born in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, on 6 October 1923, to a poor family of Hokkien descent. His father was a shopkeeper and his mother a housewife. He was the second of nine children. He received his early education at a Chinese vernacular school before moving to Singapore to attend Raffles Institution. In 1941, he was awarded a scholarship to study at Wesley College in Perth, Australia. He interrupted his studies when World War II broke out and returned to Malaysia.
In 1947, Kuok began his business career as a commodities trader in Kuala Lumpur. He later diversified his business interests into shipping, real estate, and other industries. The Kuok Group now has interests in over 50 countries and employs over 100,000 people.
Kuok is a well-known philanthropist and has donated billions of dollars to charitable causes. He is also a major supporter of the arts and has been a patron of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Kuok is married to Pauline and they have four children.
