Richard Anderson was born on August 8, 1926 in Long Branch, New Jersey, the son of Olga (née Watkin) and Harry Douglas Anderson. His father was an accountant and his mother was a telephone operator. He has two sisters, Doris and Betty. Anderson attended high school in Long Branch and graduated in 1944. He then attended Dartmouth College, where he studied economics and sociology, and played on the varsity football team. After college, he served in the United States Army for two years.
Anderson’s acting career began in 1948, when he appeared in a production of “The Glass Menagerie” at the La Jolla Playhouse in California. He then moved to New York City, where he studied acting with Stella Adler. He made his Broadway debut in 1951 in the play “Miss Julie”.
Anderson’s first film role was in the 1952 film “The Turning Point”. He then appeared in the 1953 film “The Naked Jungle” and the 1954 film “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. He also had roles on the television shows “Studio One” and “Kraft Television Theatre”.
In 1956, Anderson appeared in the film “The Ten Commandments” as Dathan, one of the Hebrew slaves. He also had a role in the 1957 film “12 Angry Men” as Juror #8. In 1958, he appeared in the film “A Touch of Evil” as Mike Vargas, a Mexican narcotics officer.
In 1959, Anderson appeared in the film “The Nun’s Story” as Dr. Fortunati, a Belgian doctor. He also had a role in the 1960 film “Spartacus” as Crassus, a Roman general. In 1961, he appeared in the film “The Longest Day” as Brigadier General Norman Cota.
In 1962, Anderson appeared in the film “The Manchurian Candidate” as Maj. Bennett Marco, a Korean War veteran. He also had a role in the 1963 film “Charade” as Peter Joshua, an American widower.
