Sofer was born on December 2, 1968 in Arcadia, California, to a Jewish family. Her parents are Martin and Susan Sofer. She has two sisters, Eden and Ariel. Sofer was raised in Conservative Judaism.
Sofer attended Beverly Hills High School, where she was a cheerleader. She then studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
Sofer’s first acting role was in the television film Letters from Frank (1984). She went on to have guest roles on television shows such as The A-Team, Magnum, P.I., and Cagney & Lacey.
In 1987, Sofer began appearing on the soap opera General Hospital as Lois Cerullo. She left the show in 1989, but returned in 1993. She remained on the show until 1997.

In 2000, Sofer began appearing on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful as Quinn Fuller. She is still appearing on the show.
Sofer has also appeared in the films Speed Zone (1989), RoboCop 2 (1990), and EdTV (1999).
Sofer has been married three times. Her first husband was actor Dann Florek, whom she married in 1987. They divorced in 1992. Her second husband was actor Ralph Fiennes, whom she married in 1998. They divorced in 2005. Her third husband is actor Jerry O’Connell, whom she married in 2007. They have two daughters together.
