Peter MacNicol is an American actor. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on April 10, 1954, to Doris (née Vetter), a homemaker, and Jimmie MacNicol, an insurance salesman. He has two younger sisters, Beth and Nancy. MacNicol attended the University of Dallas, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. He then attended the Yale School of Drama, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1980.
MacNicol began his acting career in the early 1980s with appearances in episodes of the television series “Hill Street Blues” and “St. Elsewhere.” He made his film debut in the 1982 comedy “Soup for One.” He has since appeared in such films as “Terms of Endearment” (1983), “Ghostbusters II” (1989), “Addams Family Values” (1993), “The Birdcage” (1996), and “A Beautiful Mind” (2001).
MacNicol has also had a successful career as a voice actor. He has lent his voice to the characters of Stuart Little in the “Stuart Little” films (1999-2002) and of the titular character in the “Hercules” television series (1998-1999).
MacNicol has been married to actress Janice Goldfinger since 1983. The couple has two children: son Alec James MacNicol (born 1985) and daughter Olivia Rose MacNicol (born 1989).

His paternal grandfather, originally surnamed "Jonnsen", was of Norwegian descent. Peter's other ancestry is French-Canadian, Irish, Austrian, German, English, Dutch, and Scots-Irish (Northern Irish).

In an interview in Starlog 148 (published November 1989), MacNicol revealed that in the original script for Ghostbusters II (1989), the character of Janosz Poha was a rather lackluster villain called Jason. It was MacNicol who suggested to Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis to make the art restorer come from Carpathia, linking him to the painting of Vigo. During filming, MacNicol spent a lot of time in his trailer, creating Janosz' origin and accent, as well as a mythology for Carpathia. He even came up with his own vision for a Carpathian flag, which featured a snake stepping on a man.
