Peter D. Kramer is an American author and clinical professor of psychiatry at Brown University. He is best known for his book Listening to Prozac, which was published in 1993 and became a bestseller.

Kramer was born in New York City on May 27, 1951. His parents were both Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. He has two sisters. Kramer attended the Bronx High School of Science and then went on to study at Yale University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1973 and a medical degree in 1977.

After completing his medical training, Kramer began working as a psychiatrist. He has also taught at Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Francisco.

Kramer’s book Listening to Prozac was published in 1993 and became a bestseller. The book explores the use of the antidepressant Prozac and its effects on patients’ moods and personalities.

Kramer has also written several other books, including Should You Leave? A Psychiatrist Explores Intimacy and Autonomy—and the Nature of Advice (1997), Against Depression (2005), and Ordinarily Well: The Case for Antidepressants (2016).
