Paul McCarthy is an American artist who has been active in the New York City art scene since the 1960s. He is best known for his large-scale installations and sculptures that often incorporate found objects and everyday materials. His work often deals with taboo subjects such as sex, violence, and excrement, and has been both praised and criticized for its graphic and sometimes disturbing content.

Born in 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah, McCarthy was raised in a strict Mormon household. He began experimenting with art as a teenager, and went on to study at the University of Southern California and the Otis Art Institute. After a brief stint working in the film industry, McCarthy began showing his work in galleries in the early 1970s. His early work often incorporated found objects and trash, and was sometimes compared to the work of fellow ” trash artist” Robert Rauschenberg.

In the 1980s, McCarthy began creating larger-scale installations, often incorporating video and sound. These works often dealt with controversial subjects such as sexuality, violence, and excrement. McCarthy’s 1992 installation “Painter” featured a live nude model covered in paint, and was shut down by the police after complaints from neighbors. In 1997, McCarthy created “White Snow”, a large installation consisting of a giant inflatable snowman filled with fake snow made from cocaine. The work was shown at the Venice Biennale, and caused a scandal when it was revealed that the snow was actually cocaine.

McCarthy has also worked in film and video throughout his career. In 1994, he collaborated with Mike Kelley on the film “Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites”. The film is a satirical take on the American dream, and features McCarthy playing a character based on himself. In 2006, McCarthy directed the film “The King of Comedy”, a remake of the Martin Scorsese film of the same name. The film was not well received by critics, but McCarthy’s performance as a struggling comedian was praised.

McCarthy has been married twice, first to artist Mimi Pond, with whom he has two daughters, and then to artist Anna McCarthy. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
