Noel Paul Stookey is an American folk musician, singer-songwriter, comedian, and author best known as Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary. He was born December 30, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Paul Howard Stookey, a doctor, and Margaret “Miggs” Stookey. He has a sister, Nancy. He was raised in Decatur, Illinois, and graduated from Decatur High School in 1955. He attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he majored in philosophy and religion. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959.
He began his musical career as a solo folk singer in the early 1960s. In 1961, he met Mary Travers at the Gaslight Cafe in New York City. They began performing together as a duo, and later added Peter Yarrow to form the trio Peter, Paul and Mary. The group became one of the most successful folk groups of the 1960s, with hits such as “If I Had a Hammer” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.” They were also active in the civil rights and anti-war movements.
In 1970, Stookey released his first solo album, Paul Stookey. He has since released eleven more albums, including two children’s albums. He has also written several books, including a memoir, The Way I See It: Reflections on Life, Faith and Music (2009).
Stookey is married to Elizabeth “Libby” Weckler. They have three children: Christopher, Elisabeth, and Emily.
