Monica Lewis (born May 7, 1922) is an American actress, singer and voice artist. She is best known for her role as the voice of Chiquita Banana in the Chiquita Banana radio and television commercials from 1947 to 1951.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Lewis was the only child of Ukrainian immigrants. Her father, Peter, was a violinist and her mother, Anna, was a piano teacher. Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of five and made her stage debut as a singer at the age of eight.
Lewis’s career began in radio in the 1940s. She was the voice of Betty Crocker on the “Betty Crocker Show” and also had roles on “The Jack Benny Program” and “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”. In 1947, she began voicing the character of Chiquita Banana in the Chiquita Banana radio and television commercials. The commercials were so popular that Lewis recorded an album of songs as Chiquita Banana in 1950.
In the 1950s, Lewis appeared in several films, including “The Fuller Brush Girl” (1950), “The Bad and the Beautiful” (1952) and “The Glenn Miller Story” (1954). She also had roles on television shows such as “The Loretta Young Show” and “Perry Mason”.
In later years, Lewis continued to work as a voice artist, appearing in cartoons such as “The Flintstones”, “Scooby-Doo” and “The Simpsons”. She also had roles in video games such as “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City” (2002) and “Lego Dimensions” (2015).
Lewis has been married three times. Her first husband was actor William Lundigan, whom she married in 1943. The couple had two daughters before divorcing in 1951. Her second husband was businessman Richard Kline, whom she married in 1952. The couple had one son before divorcing in 1962. Her third husband was actor John Archer, whom she married in 1963. The couple remained married until Archer’s death in 1999.
