Michael Anthony is an American musician who is best known as the bass player for the rock band Van Halen. He is also a member of the rock supergroup Chickenfoot. Anthony has been a part of Van Halen since 1974 and has appeared on all of their studio albums. He has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and has won two.
Anthony was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 20, 1954. His father, Jerry, was a musician and his mother, Antoinette, was an Italian immigrant. Anthony has two older sisters, Gina and Paula. Anthony’s father died when he was just four years old. His mother remarried and had two more children, Mark and Lisa.
Anthony began playing the bass guitar when he was just thirteen years old. He was inspired by his older sister Gina’s boyfriend who was a bass player in a local band. Anthony’s first band was called Black Opal. He later joined a band called Snake, which featured future Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen.
Van Halen was formed in 1974 with Anthony on bass, Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, and David Lee Roth on vocals. The band’s debut album, Van Halen, was released in 1978 and was an instant success. The album featured the hits “Runnin’ with the Devil” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”
Van Halen’s second album, Van Halen II, was released in 1979 and featured the hit single “Dance the Night Away.” The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart.

The band’s fifth album, Diver Down, was released in 1982 and reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit singles “Pretty Woman” and “I’ll Wait.”
The band’s sixth album, 1984, was released in 1984 and reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit singles “Jump” and “Panama.”
Van Halen’s seventh album, 5150, was released in 1986 and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit singles “Why Can’t This Be Love” and “Dreams.”
Van Halen’s eighth album, OU812, was released in 1988 and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit single “Finish What Ya Started.”
Van Halen’s ninth album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, was released in 1991 and reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit singles “Right Now” and “Poundcake.”
Van Halen’s tenth album, Balance, was released in 1995 and reached number five on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit single “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You.”
Van Halen’s eleventh album, Van Halen III, was released in 1998 and reached number four on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit single “Without You.”
Van Halen went on hiatus in 2004 but reunited in 2007 for a successful world tour. The band released a new album, A Different Kind of Truth, in 2012.
Anthony has also been a member of the rock supergroup Chickenfoot since 2008. The group has released three albums: Chickenfoot (2009), Chickenfoot III (2011), and IV (2014).
In addition to his work with Van Halen and Chickenfoot, Anthony has also released two solo albums: Michael Anthony (1995) and Mad Anthony (1999).
