Melvin Belli (July 29, 1907 – July 9, 1996) was an American lawyer known as “The King of Torts” and by insurance companies as “Melvin the Menace”. He was also one of the first celebrity lawyers, and his flamboyant style was later copied by many lawyers.
Belli was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Amelia (née Eddy) and Enrico Belli, Italian immigrants. His father was a baker who wanted his son to become a doctor or a lawyer. Melvin went to St. Ignatius College Preparatory and then to the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a degree in economics in 1929. He then attended UC Hastings College of the Law, where he earned a law degree in 1932.
Belli began his career working for the district attorney’s office in San Francisco. He then opened his own law firm, which he ran for over 60 years. His firm specialized in personal injury cases, and he became known for his aggressive trial tactics and high settlements. He represented many famous clients, including Errol Flynn, Mae West, Joan Crawford, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and The Rolling Stones. He also represented Jack Ruby, the man who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, and Jim Bakker, the televangelist who was convicted of fraud.
Belli was married six times and had four children. His first wife was Dorothy Cadwell, with whom he had two sons, Caesar and Melvin Jr. His second wife was Jean Cushing, with whom he had a daughter, Christina. His third wife was Lia Maestri, with whom he had a son, Tony. His fourth wife was Sandra Moser, with whom he had a daughter, Anna. His fifth wife was Catherine Campion, with whom he had no children. His sixth and final wife was Nancy Hooper, with whom he had no children.
Belli died of natural causes at his home in San Francisco at the age of 88.

He won a class-action suit against Dow-Corning. Despite his victory in court, Dow-Corning's subsequent bankruptcy left him unable to recoup the $5,000,000 his firm has spent on physicians and other expert witnesses. This forced his firm, not him personally, to seek bankruptcy protection in December, 1995, just months before his death.
