May’s career began when she was just 18 years old. She was performing in a vaudeville show in New York City when she was spotted by a talent scout for the Edison Manufacturing Company. The scout convinced her to audition for a new film they were making called The Kiss. May agreed, and she ended up getting the part.

The Kiss was released in 1896, and it was a huge success. It was the first film to ever be shown in public, and it made May Irwin a household name. She went on to star in several more films for Edison, including The Widow Jones and The Sunshine Girl.

May’s career began to decline in the early 1900s, and she retired from acting in 1915. She made a brief comeback in the 1920s, appearing in a few silent films.
