Martin Dempsey was born on March 14, 1952 in Bayonne, New Jersey. His parents, William and Anne (née Kelleher) Dempsey, were of Irish descent. He has three sisters: Barbara, Nancy and Sharon. He was educated at St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, New Jersey, and graduated in 1970. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1974.

Dempsey began his military career as an Army Ranger and served in a variety of command and staff positions, including two tours in Iraq. In 2003, he was a key planner of the invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. In 2007, he became the commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq (MNSTC-I), which was responsible for training and equipping the Iraqi security forces.
In 2011, Dempsey was nominated by President Barack Obama to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and he was confirmed by the Senate in a unanimous vote. He served in this role for four years, during which time he oversaw the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and the beginning of the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan.
Dempsey retired from the military in 2015 and joined the board of directors of General Dynamics Corporation. He also serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Council on Foreign Relations and the USO.
Dempsey has been married to his wife, Deanie, for over 40 years. They have three children: Megan, Bryan and Kristin.
