Mark Phillips (born September 22, 1948) is a retired American equestrian and Olympic gold medalist. He was born in New York City, the son of Betsey Cushing Roosevelt Whitney and George Henry Alexander Phillips. His parents divorced when he was four, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, James T. Lee. Phillips began riding at age four and competed in his first horse show at age six. He attended the Fessenden School and graduated from St. Mark’s School in 1966. He went on to attend Yale University, where he was a member of the varsity equestrian team. Phillips graduated from Yale in 1970 with a degree in art history.

Phillips began his professional career as a rider for the United States Equestrian Team (USET) in 1971. He won his first major international event, the individual gold medal at the Pan American Games, in 1975. The following year, he was a member of the USET team that won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal. Phillips also won individual gold medals at the World Championships in 1978 and 1982, and a silver medal at the 1986 World Championships. He retired from competition in 1987.

Phillips has worked as a commentator for NBC Sports’ coverage of equestrian events, including the Olympic Games. He has also written several books on horsemanship and equestrian sports. Phillips is married to former Olympic dressage rider Debbie McDonald. They have one daughter, Jessica, who is also an equestrian. Phillips has an estimated net worth of $5 million.
