Margaret Brown, née Tobin, (born July 18, 1867, Hannibal, Missouri, U.S.—died October 26, 1932, New York, New York), American philanthropist and social reformer who was best known for her heroic efforts to save lives during the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Early life and education

Tobin was born in Hannibal, Missouri, on July 18, 1867, the daughter of Irish immigrants. Her father, John Tobin, was a stonecutter. When she was eight years old, her family moved to Leadville, Colorado, in search of a better life. There she attended public schools and worked in her father’s business.

In 1886 she married James Joseph Brown, a miner. The couple had two children. James died in 1889, and Margaret subsequently married John Jacob Astor IV, one of the wealthiest men in America. The Astors had one child.

Career

During her marriage to Astor, Brown became involved in various philanthropic and social reform activities. She was a leading figure in the women’s suffrage movement and an active supporter of the Democratic Party.

In 1912 she was travelling on the Titanic with her husband when it struck an iceberg and began to sink. Brown helped to organize the evacuation of the ship and was instrumental in getting lifeboats lowered safely. She refused to get into a lifeboat herself until all the women and children had been taken care of. After the Titanic sank, Brown worked tirelessly to help the survivors and the families of those who had perished.

In later years she continued her work for social reform and also wrote her memoirs, The Story of My Life (1924).

Physical Characteristics

Brown was a tall woman with blue eyes and dark hair. She was known for her stylish clothing and her diamonds.
