Blackman was born in London, England, on February 8, 1962. Her parents were both Jamaican immigrants who had come to London in the 1950s. Blackman has two older sisters. She was educated at a local primary school and then at secondary school in Croydon. She went on to study mathematics at the University of Manchester.
Blackman began her writing career while working as a teacher. Her first book, Not So Stupid!, was published in 1990. She has since published over fifty books, including the Noughts & Crosses series, which has been adapted for television. Blackman’s work often deals with difficult topics such as racism and discrimination.
Blackman has won numerous awards for her work, including the Children’s Book Award and the Red House Children’s Book Award. In 2005, she was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to children’s literature.
Blackman is married to Darren Galsworthy, with whom she has two children.
