Lloyd Price (born March 9, 1933) is an American R&B singer, songwriter and businessman. He is best known for his 1952 hit “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” and his 1958 hit “Stagger Lee”. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Price was born in Kenner, Louisiana, and grew up in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans. His father worked as a truck driver and his mother was a homemaker. He had seven brothers and sisters.
Price’s musical career began in the early 1950s, when he started singing with local bands in New Orleans. In 1952, he recorded the song “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, which became a huge hit. The song made him a star and he began touring the country. In 1958, he recorded the song “Stagger Lee”, which became another huge hit.
Price’s career declined in the 1960s, but he continued to perform and record. In the 1970s, he started a successful business selling fried chicken. He also opened a nightclub in New Orleans called “Lloyd’s”.
In 1998, Price was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is still active in the music business and performs regularly.
