Price was born in Kenner, Louisiana, and grew up in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans. His father worked as a truck driver and his mother was a homemaker. He had seven brothers and sisters.

Price’s musical career began in the early 1950s, when he started singing with local bands in New Orleans. In 1952, he recorded the song “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, which became a huge hit.
