Lenny Pickett (born May 31, 1953) is an American saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He is best known for his work with the rock band Talking Heads, and as the musical director of Saturday Night Live.

Pickett was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father was a jazz trumpet player, and his mother was a singer. He began playing saxophone at the age of nine. He attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, and then studied music at the University of Pennsylvania.

Pickett’s first professional gig was with the band MFSB, which was the house band for the Philadelphia soul radio station WDAS. He also played with the house band at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. In 1975, he moved to New York City, where he became a member of the house band at the club CBGB.

In 1977, Pickett auditioned for the rock band Talking Heads. He was hired as a sideman, and appeared on the band’s second album, More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978). He also played on the band’s third album, Fear of Music (1979), and toured with the band in support of the album.

In 1980, Pickett was hired as the musical director of Saturday Night Live. He has held that position ever since, and has also appeared as a saxophonist on many of the show’s sketches and musical performances.

Pickett has released two solo albums, Lenny Pickett with The Borneo Horns (1982) and The Lenny Pickett Band Live at The 55 Bar (2007). He has also composed music for film and television, including the theme song for the HBO series The Wire.

Pickett’s net worth is estimated to be $4 million. He has been married twice; his first marriage ended in divorce, and he has two children from his second marriage.
