Larry King Live is an American television show hosted by Larry King on CNN. It was CNN’s most watched and longest-running program, with over one million viewers nightly. King interviewed politicians, celebrities, athletes, and other newsmakers. The show began in 1985 and ended in 2010.
King was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 1933. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia. He has four siblings. King was educated at a public school in Brooklyn and then at the University of Miami, where he majored in journalism.
King began his career in radio in the 1950s. He worked for several radio stations in Miami before moving to Washington, D.C., in 1961 to work for Mutual Broadcasting System. From there, he went on to host his own nationally syndicated radio show, The Larry King Show.
In 1985, King began hosting Larry King Live on CNN. The show quickly became CNN’s most popular program. Over the years, King interviewed a wide range of guests, including U.S. presidents, world leaders, celebrities, and athletes.
Larry King Live ended in 2010 after 25 years on the air. King continued to host occasional specials for CNN until his death in 2021.
King was married eight times and had five children. His first wife was Annette Kaye, with whom he had one child, Larry Jr. His second wife was Alene Akins, with whom he had two children, Chaia and Andy. His third wife was Sharon Lepore, with whom he had one child, Cannon. His fourth wife was Julie Alexander, with whom he had no children. His fifth wife was Shawn Southwick, with whom he had two children, Chance and Cannon.
King had a net worth of $150 million at the time of his death. He made an annual salary of $10 million from his work at CNN. He also earned millions from his syndicated radio show and from his books and other ventures.
King was a heavy smoker for most of his life and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1987. He underwent surgery to remove part of his lung and continued to smoke afterwards. In 2017, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and underwent treatment. He died on January 23, 2021, at the age of 87.
