Kinky Friedman is an American country singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist, and political activist. He is known for his unconventional style, which often includes wearing a black cowboy hat and sunglasses. He has been a member of the Texas Legislature and ran unsuccessfully for governor of Texas in 2006.
Friedman was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 1, 1944. His parents, Maury and Eda (née Buxbaum), were Jewish immigrants from Poland. He has a sister, Barbara. Friedman was raised in a Conservative Jewish household in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He attended Ridgewood High School, where he was captain of the tennis team.
Friedman began his musical career in the early 1960s as a member of the folk music group The Holy Modal Rounders. He released his first solo album, Kinky Friedman, in 1974. The album’s title track, “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore”, was a top-40 country hit in 1975.

Friedman has also been active in politics and ran unsuccessfully for governor of Texas as an independent candidate in 2006 (he received 12% of the vote). He has also served as a member of the Texas Legislature (1999-2001).
Friedman has been married three times: to Susanna Clark (1971-1981), to Emily Joyce (1982-1988), and to Allison Taylor (1989-present). He has two children: Rachel (born 1974) and Daniel (born 1977).
