Green’s big break came in 1933 when he was hired to write arrangements for the Broadway musical “As Thousands Cheer.” The show was a hit and Green’s arrangements were praised by critics. In the 1940s, Green began working in Hollywood, writing music for films such as “The Jolson Story” and “Easter Parade.” He also wrote the scores for a number of successful MGM musicals, including “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” Green won an Academy Award for his work on the latter film.

In the 1950s, Green returned to Broadway, writing the scores for such hits as “The King and I” and “My Fair Lady.” He also wrote the music for the film version of “The King and I,” which won him another Academy Award.

Green continued to work in Hollywood throughout the 1960s and 1970s, writing music for films such as “The Sound of Music” and “The Way We Were.” His last film score was for the 1980 film “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
