John Davis was born on October 25, 1967, in San Diego, California. His parents were both schoolteachers. He has two older sisters. He attended public schools in San Diego and graduated from high school in 1985. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1989. After graduation, he worked for a few years as a financial analyst for a bank in San Francisco. In 1992, he enrolled in the Stanford University Law School and earned his law degree in 1995.

After law school, Davis worked as a law clerk for a federal judge in San Francisco. He then worked as a lawyer in the San Francisco office of a large law firm. In 2000, he left the law firm to start his own law practice. In 2003, he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He served on the board for two terms and was its president from 2009 to 2011.

In 2012, Davis ran for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate from California. He lost in the primary election to the incumbent senator, Dianne Feinstein.

In 2014, Davis was elected to the California State Senate. He represents the state’s 3rd Senate District, which includes parts of San Francisco and San Mateo counties.

Davis is married to Anne Gust, a former executive vice president of The Gap, Inc. They have two children.

Davis has an estimated net worth of $5 million. His salary as a state senator is $95,291 per year.
