Joel Osteen is an American pastor, televangelist, and author, born on March 5, 1963 in Houston, Texas. He is the senior pastor of Lakewood Church, in Houston, Texas. Osteen’s televised sermons are seen by over 7 million viewers weekly and over 20 million monthly in over 100 countries. His sermons also broadcast on Sirius XM Satellite Radio and Family Radio.

Osteen has written seven New York Times Bestsellers. He has been widely nicknamed “The Smiling Preacher”. Osteen has been criticized for his wealth and for not preaching “fire and brimstone” sermons.

Early Life

Joel Osteen was born on March 5, 1963, in Houston, Texas, to John Osteen and Dolores Pilgrim. His father was a Southern Baptist minister who founded Lakewood Church in 1959. His mother was a stay-at-home mom. Osteen has six siblings: Paul, Lisa, Tamara, April, Justin, and Victoria.

Osteen was raised a Southern Baptist. He graduated from Humble High School in 1981. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in radio and television communications from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.


In 1982, his father asked him to take over the church’s television ministry after his health began to decline. Osteen began preaching regularly in 1999. He took over as senior pastor of Lakewood Church on October 3, 1999, following his father’s death.

In January 2003, Osteen published his first book, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential. The book topped The New York Times Best Seller list for non-fiction books in 2004. In 2006, he published Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day. In 2007, he published It’s Your Time: Activate Your Faith, Achieve Your Dreams, and Increase in God’s Favor.

In May 2014, Osteen’s fourth book, Break Out!: 5 Keys to Go Beyond Your Barriers and Live an Extraordinary Life was released. In November 2015, he released his fifth book, The Power of I Am: Two Words That Will Change Your Life Today. In October 2016, he released his sixth book, Blessed in the Darkness: How All Things Are Working for Your Good. In September 2017, he released his seventh book, Can You Stand to Be Blessed?

In 2005, Osteen launched Joel Osteen Ministries. The ministry provides resources such as books, CDs, DVDs and other materials at Christian conferences held around the United States. Joel Osteen Ministries also offers online resources such as daily devotionals and a weekly podcast.

Osteen’s television program airs on various Christian television networks, including Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), Daystar Television Network (Daystar), The Word Network (TWN), Inspiration Network (INSP), Hillsong Channel (Hillsong), and Smile of a Child TV (SMILE). The program is also broadcast on various secular television networks, including ABC Family (now Freeform), OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), TLC (TLC), and Fox News Channel (FNC).

In 2007, Osteen was named by Time magazine as one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World”. He was also named by Reader’s Digest as the “Most Trusted Religious Leader” in the United States.

In October 2010, Osteen appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show for an interview about his book Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day. During the interview, Winfrey praised Osteen for his “positive messages”.

In 2013, Osteen was named one of Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People”.

In 2015, Osteen was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People”.

In 2016, Osteen was inducted into the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
