He has four siblings: John, Brian, Neil, and Elizabeth. Murray attended The New Trier High School West in Illinois and then went on to study at the DePaul University in Chicago.

Murray’s first acting role was in the 1984 film Ghostbusters as a security guard. He has since appeared in over 100 films and television shows. Some of his most notable roles include Bob Wiley in What About Bob?, Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Phil Weston in Kingpin, and Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski. He has also done voice work for animated films and television shows such as The Simpsons, Futurama, and Adventure Time.
