Joe Frazier, nicknamed “Smokin’ Joe”, was an American professional boxer who competed from 1965 to 1981. He was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world from 1970 to 1973, and as an amateur won a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
Frazier was born and raised in Beaufort, South Carolina, the seventh of 12 children of Dolly Alston-Frazier and Rubin Frazier. His parents were poor sharecroppers of African descent. Rubin Frazier had left his family at age 16, and Joe never met him. Dolly Frazier worked as a maid and laundress to support her large family. The family moved to New York City when Frazier was about six. Frazier’s first job was as a horse stable boy.
Frazier began boxing when he was about 15 years old, winning his first amateur bout by knockout. He won the New York Golden Gloves championship in 1963 and 1964 in the heavyweight division. In 1964, Frazier represented the United States at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, winning a gold medal.
Frazier turned professional in 1965, and won his first 19 fights by knockout, 12 of them in the first round. In 1967, he won the vacant New York State Athletic Commission world heavyweight title with a fifth-round knockout of Buster Mathis. In 1970, Frazier fought Muhammad Ali for the first time, in what was billed as “The Fight of the Century”. Frazier won by unanimous decision to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
Frazier defended his title three times, defeating Ali in a rematch in 1971 (known as “The Fight of the Century, Part II”), George Foreman in 1973 (known as “The Sunshine Showdown”), and Ken Norton in 1973 (known as “The Thrilla in Manila”). In 1974, Frazier lost his title to Ali in a rematch (known as “The Rumble in the Jungle”). Frazier continued to fight, but never regained the heavyweight title. He retired from boxing in 1981 with a record of 32 wins (27 by knockout) and 4 losses.
Frazier had a net worth of $5 million at the time of his death. He earned most of his income from boxing purses and endorsements. In 1970, he earned $1 million for his fight with Muhammad Ali. In 1971, he earned $2.5 million for his rematch with Ali. In 1973, he earned $5 million for his fight with George Foreman.
Frazier married Florence Smith in 1967. They had four children together: two sons (Marvis and Joe Jr.) and two daughters (Jacqui and Weatta). Frazier and Smith divorced in 1985. Frazier married his second wife, Mary Jo Wade, in 1986. They had one son together, Rodney. Frazier and Wade divorced in 1999.
Frazier was 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m) tall and weighed 210 pounds (95 kg) during his boxing career. He had a reach of 73 inches (1.85 m).
