Joan Leslie was an American actress, dancer and vaudevillian who appeared in such films as High Sierra, Sergeant York and Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Born Joan Agnes Theresa Sadie Brodel on January 26, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, Joan was the youngest of five children. Her parents were John and Agnes (née O’Connor) Brodel, who were both of German descent. Joan’s father worked as a tool and die maker for the Ford Motor Company, while her mother was a homemaker.
Joan began her show business career at the age of seven, when she appeared on a local radio show. She later took up tap dancing and became a part of a vaudeville act called “The Five Brodels”.
In 1940, at the age of 15, Joan made her film debut in the comedy They Knew What They Wanted. She would go on to appear in such films as High Sierra (1941), Sergeant York (1941), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944).
During her career, Joan was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. She retired from acting in the early 1950s.
Joan Leslie died on October 12, 2015 at the age of 90.
