James Sullivan was born on April 6, 1814, in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were John and Elizabeth (née Smith) Sullivan. He had four siblings: John, George, Edward, and Mary. Sullivan was educated at the Boston Latin School and Harvard College, from which he graduated in 1837.

Sullivan began his career as a lawyer, but he soon became involved in politics. He served in the Massachusetts legislature from 1841 to 1842 and in the United States House of Representatives from 1843 to 1845. In 1846, he was elected governor of Massachusetts. He served two terms, from 1846 to 1851.

As governor, Sullivan worked to improve the state’s infrastructure and to promote education. He also supported the abolition of slavery and the admission of California as a free state. After leaving office, Sullivan returned to his law practice. He also served as a trustee of Harvard College from 1858 to 1873.

Sullivan died on January 22, 1886, in Boston. He was survived by his wife, Mary (née Smith) Sullivan, and their four children: James, John, Edward, and Mary.

Sullivan was a successful lawyer and politician. He served as governor of Massachusetts from 1846 to 1851. He was a trustee of Harvard College from 1858 to 1873. Sullivan died on January 22, 1886, in Boston.
