J.D. Drew was born on November 20, 1975, in Valdosta, Georgia. His parents are Steve and Joanne Drew. He has two brothers, Tim and Stephen, and one sister, Jennifer. J.D. Drew was a highly touted baseball prospect coming out of high school. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the 1994 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign with them. Instead, he chose to attend Florida State University. In three years at Florida State, Drew hit .394 with 45 home runs and 175 RBIs. He was named a First Team All-American in 1996. After his junior year, Drew was once again drafted, this time by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the 1997 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Cardinals and made his Major League debut that September.
In 1998, his first full season in the majors, Drew hit .300 with 19 home runs and 70 RBIs. He was named to the National League All-Star team and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. Drew continued to be a productive player for the Cardinals over the next few years. In 2000, he hit .323 with 28 home runs and 100 RBIs. He was once again named to the National League All-Star team. After the 2001 season, Drew became a free agent and signed a six-year contract with the Boston Red Sox.
