Hugh Masekela was born in Kwa-Guqa Township, Witbank, South Africa, on April 4, 1939. His father was a health inspector and his mother a social worker. He was the oldest of four children. Masekela’s first exposure to music was at church, where he sang in the choir and played piano. He began playing the trumpet at age 14, after seeing Louis Armstrong on television.
Masekela’s talent was quickly recognized and he was awarded a scholarship to study trumpet at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He arrived in the United States in 1960 and quickly became involved in the jazz scene. He played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis, among others. He also recorded a number of albums as a leader.
Masekela’s career was interrupted in the 1970s when he was forced to return to South Africa to fulfill his military service. Upon his return, he became involved in the anti-apartheid movement. He recorded several albums that were critical of the South African government and its policies.
In the 1980s, Masekela relocated to Los Angeles, where he continued to record and perform. He also began to work in film and television, composing music for several movies and television shows.
Masekela has been married three times. His first wife was Miriam Makeba, with whom he had a daughter, Palesa. His second wife was Elinam Cofie, with whom he had a son, Salifu. His third wife is Barbara Masekela, with whom he has a daughter, Lebo.
Masekela has won numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1987, he was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance for his album Graca. He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006.
