Hideyuki Kikuchi (菊池 秀行, Kikuchi Hideyuki, born February 8, 1949) is a Japanese author best known for his horror fiction series, Vampire Hunter D. He has also written under the pen names of H.K. and Kikuchi-san.
Kikuchi was born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan. His father was a doctor and his mother was a nurse. He has two older sisters. Kikuchi’s interest in horror began at an early age when he read Dracula at the age of eight. He was also a big fan of Edogawa Ranpo’s detective stories. Kikuchi graduated from Asahikawa Medical College in 1974 and worked as a doctor for two years.
In 1976, Kikuchi made his debut as a writer with the novel Demon City Shinjuku. The novel was adapted into a manga by Yoshitaka Amano and an anime OVA by Yoshiaki Kawajiri in 1988. Kikuchi has written over 30 novels in the Vampire Hunter D series, which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The series has been adapted into manga, anime, and live-action films.
Kikuchi is married to Japanese singer and songwriter Chisako Sakamoto. They have two daughters.
Kikuchi has won several awards for his work, including the Seiun Award for Best Novel in 1984 and 1985, the Horror Writers Association Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2006, and the Japan Fantasy Novel Award in 2008.
