Henry Jones was born on July 1, 1892, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents were Henry and Anna Jones. He had two brothers and two sisters. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a homemaker. He attended public schools in Indianapolis and graduated from high school in 1910. He then attended Purdue University, where he studied engineering. He graduated from Purdue in 1914 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
After graduation, he began working for his father’s business, Jones & Company. He worked there for two years before enlisting in the United States Army in 1916. He served in the Army during World War I and attained the rank of captain. After the war, he returned to Jones & Company. In 1920, he married Mary Elizabeth Smith. The couple had three children: Henry Jr., Anna, and Elizabeth.
In 1922, he founded the Henry Jones Company, which manufactured automobile parts. The company was successful, and he became a millionaire. In 1929, he bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He also owned several racecars and was a successful racecar driver. In 1930, he won the Indianapolis 500.
During the Great Depression, his businesses suffered, and he lost much of his wealth. In 1933, he was forced to sell the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He continued to racecars and also became a successful racecar team owner. In 1947, he won the Indianapolis 500 again. He retired from racing in 1950.
In the 1950s, he returned to business and regained his wealth. He also became involved in philanthropy and donated millions of dollars to charities. He died on April 7, 1966, at the age of 73.
