Heather Headley (born October 5, 1974) is a Tony and Grammy Award-winning Trinidadian-American R&B and Broadway singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. Headley has released five studio albums, scored two number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has won a Grammy Award and a Tony Award.
Headley was born in Trinidad and Tobago, the daughter of Joycelyn (née Alleyne), a homemaker, and Clifford Headley, an insurance broker. She has two older sisters, Sharon and Michelle. When she was five years old, her family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the United States. Headley began singing in her church choir when she was eight years old. She graduated from Northrop High School in 1992, and then attended Northwestern University, where she studied opera.
Headley’s professional career began in 1997, when she made her Broadway debut in the musical The Lion King. She originated the role of Nala, and her performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Headley then released her debut album, This Is Who I Am, in 2002. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It spawned the hit single “In My Mind”, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2005, Headley starred in the Broadway musical Aida. She originated the role of Aida, and her performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Headley then released her second album, In My Mind, in 2006. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It spawned the hit single “In My Mind”, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2010, Headley starred in the Broadway musical The Bodyguard. She originated the role of Rachel Marron, and her performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Headley is married to Brian Musso, with whom she has two daughters.
