Gwen Taylor (born 23 December 1937) is an English actress. She is known for her roles as Barbara Liversidge in the sitcoms A Bit of a Do (1986–87) and Barbara in the sitcoms The Royal Family (1991–92) and Waiting for God (1990–94).

Early Life

Gwen Taylor was born on 23 December 1937 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Her parents were George Taylor, a steelworker, and Gladys Taylor (née Jackson), a housewife. She has two brothers, Graham and Trevor.

Taylor was educated at Scunthorpe Grammar School for Girls. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.

Career

Taylor’s first television role was in the BBC series Z-Cars in 1962. She went on to appear in the ITV series The Avengers (1964) and The Saint (1965). She had a recurring role as Mrs. Webb in the BBC series Dad’s Army (1968–77).

In the 1980s, Taylor appeared in the sitcoms A Bit of a Do (1986–87) and The Royal Family (1991–92). She also appeared in the sitcom Waiting for God (1990–94).

Taylor has appeared in many stage plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest (1982), The Taming of the Shrew (1984), and The Merry Wives of Windsor (1985).

In 2006, Taylor appeared in the film Venus.

Personal Life

Taylor married actor Timothy West in 1962. They have two sons, Samuel and Joseph.

Taylor is a patron of the charity Age UK.
