Grant Flower (born 11 October 1968) is a Zimbabwean cricket coach and former player. He played as an opening batsman and occasional off-spinner for Zimbabwe between 1992 and 2001, and was a member of their World Cup squads in 1992, 1996 and 1999. He also played county cricket for Essex, Lancashire and Durham.
After retiring from playing, Flower became a coach, first with Zimbabwe and then with Pakistan. He was the head coach of the Pakistan national cricket team from 2014 to 2019.
Early Life
Flower was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe). His father, Ken, was a schoolteacher, and his mother, Sheila, was a librarian. He has two older brothers, Trevor and Ashley.
Flower was educated at Prince Edward School in Harare. He first played cricket for Zimbabwe at Under-19 level in 1986.
Career
Flower made his Test debut for Zimbabwe against India in 1992. He played in Zimbabwe’s first ever One Day International (ODI) match, against Pakistan in 1992. He was a member of Zimbabwe’s World Cup squads in 1992, 1996 and 1999.
In all, Flower played 63 Test matches and 213 ODIs for Zimbabwe. He scored 4794 Test runs at an average of 42.54, including 11 centuries, and 5357 ODI runs at an average of 34.33, with 11 centuries. He is Zimbabwe’s second highest Test run-scorer and third highest ODI run-scorer.
After retiring from playing, Flower became a coach. He was the assistant coach of the Zimbabwe national cricket team from 2001 to 2005. He then became the head coach of the team from 2005 to 2010.
In October 2011, Flower was appointed as the batting coach of the Pakistan national cricket team. In April 2014, he was appointed as the head coach of the team. He resigned from the position in September 2019.
