Fred was born on October 18, 1883, in Liverpool, England. His parents were William and Annie (née Hughes) Fred. He had four siblings: William, John, George, and Annie. Fred’s early education was at St. Peter’s School in Liverpool. He began his career as a professional footballer with Everton in 1902.

He moved to Aston Villa in 1913 and helped the team win the First Division title in 1910–11 and the FA Cup in 1913. Fred retired from playing in 1929. He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005. His net worth was estimated at £20 million (equivalent to £175 million in 2019). Fred was married to Edith (née Milburn) from 1909 until her death in 1965.

They had four children: William, John, George, and Annie. Fred died on December 2, 1965, at the age of 82.
