Florencio Sánchez (1875-1910) was a Uruguayan playwright, journalist and short story writer. He is considered one of the founders of the modern Uruguayan theatre.

Sánchez was born in Montevideo on July 28, 1875. His father was a journalist and his mother was a schoolteacher. He had two brothers and two sisters.

Sánchez was educated at the Colegio Nacional de Montevideo and the Universidad de la República. He began his career as a journalist, working for various newspapers in Montevideo.

In 1898, Sánchez published his first play, “La Gata” (“The Cat”). This was followed by “La Mujer del Pueblo” (“The Woman of the People”) in 1899 and “Los Gauchos Judíos” (“The Jewish Gauchos”) in 1900.

Sánchez’s plays were popular with the public, but were often criticized by the critics. In 1902, he published a collection of short stories, “Cuentos de la Vida Humana” (“Stories of Human Life”).

In 1910, Sánchez was killed in a duel with another journalist, Luis Tasso. He was only 35 years old.

Sánchez was a controversial figure in his lifetime, but his plays and stories are now considered classics of Uruguayan literature.
