Florence Henderson was born on February 14, 1934 in Dale, Indiana. Her parents were Elizabeth (Fruit) and Joseph Henderson. She had six siblings: brothers Richard, Robert, William, and Donald; and sisters Beverly and Ethyl. Henderson’s father worked as a farmhand and her mother was a homemaker. Henderson’s family was very poor and she often had to wear her brother’s hand-me-down clothes. Henderson’s early education was in a one-room schoolhouse. She later attended high school in New York City.

Henderson’s career began when she was discovered by a talent agent while singing in a nightclub. She made her Broadway debut in the musical “Wish You Were Here” (1952). Henderson’s breakout role came in the sitcom “The Brady Bunch” (1969-1974), where she played Carol Brady, the mother of six children. After “The Brady Bunch” ended, Henderson appeared in a number of TV movies and guest-starred on various TV shows. She also starred in her own variety show, “The Florence Henderson Show” (1985-1986).
Henderson was married four times. Her first husband was John Kappas, with whom she had two children: Elizabeth and Joseph. Her second husband was Harry Kane, with whom she had one child: Barbara. Her third husband was John Kestell, with whom she had one child: Robert. Her fourth and final husband was Bruce Oppenheim, with whom she had no children.
