Benson was born in San Diego, California on July 2, 1964. His parents were both accountants. He has two older sisters. Benson attended Catholic school until the eighth grade. He then went to public high school, where he was a member of the drama club. After graduation, Benson attended the University of California, Santa Barbara. He originally planned to study marine biology, but switched to film after taking a class on the history of cinema.

Benson began his comedy career performing at open mic nights in Santa Barbara. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he became a regular at the Comedy Store. He made his television debut on an episode of the game show Jeopardy! in 1988. He began appearing on Comedy Central in the early 2000s, with his first stand-up special airing in 2004. He has since released several comedy albums and DVDs.

Benson directed the 2007 film Super High Me, in which he documented his experience of smoking marijuana every day for 30 days. He also hosted the marijuana-themed reality show The High Court from 2017 to 2018.

Benson has been open about his use of marijuana and has said that it helps him with his anxiety and depression. He is a member of the pro-legalization group NORML and has spoken out in favor of decriminalizing drug use.

Benson has been in a relationship with graphic designer Alison Rosen since 2011. The couple has two children together.
