For his actions, Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a sailor.
After the war, Doris Miller returned to civilian life. He worked as a janitor and a security guard. In 1973, he was diagnosed with cancer. He died on November 24, 1998, at the age of 79.
