On December 7, 1941, Doris Miller was on duty when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was credited with helping to move wounded sailors to safety and manning a machine gun against the enemy. For his actions, Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a sailor.
