Deke Slayton was born in Sparta, Wisconsin, on March 1, 1924. He was the eldest of five children born to parents Charles and Ruth Slayton. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. He attended local schools and graduated from Sparta High School in 1942.

He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but his studies were interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a bomber pilot in Europe. He flew a total of 30 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After the war, he returned to the University of Wisconsin and graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1949. He then began a career as a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force. In 1950, he married Mary Knox. The couple had four children.

In 1959, he was selected as one of the original seven astronauts for the NASA space program. He made his first space flight in 1971 on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, which was the first joint U.S.-Soviet space mission. He retired from NASA in 1977 and from the Air Force in 1979.

In 1982, he founded the Slayton Aerospace Company, which provided consulting services to the aerospace industry. He also wrote an autobiography, entitled Deke!, which was published in 1988.

He died of cancer on June 13, 1993, at the age of 69.
