Jones was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Richard Jones, was a jazz trumpet player who exposed him to the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane at an early age. His mother, Barbara Jones, was a gospel singer. He has two sisters, Deborah and Diane.

Jones began playing bass guitar at the age of 12. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied jazz performance. After college, he moved to New York City and began his professional career as a sideman, playing with artists such as Sting, Madonna, Eric Clapton, and Miles Davis.

In 1993, Jones was invited to join the Rolling Stones after the departure of bassist Bill Wyman. He has appeared on every Stones album since 1994’s Voodoo Lounge, and has toured with the band extensively.
