Cloris Leachman is an American actress of stage, film, and television. She is the recipient of numerous acting awards, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award, and a Daytime Emmy Award. She is one of only a handful of entertainers to have won all four awards.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 30, 1926, Cloris Leachman was the daughter of Berkeley Claiborne “Buck” Leachman, who worked at the family’s lumber company, and the former Cloris Wallace. She had an older brother, Claiborne Cary “Buck” Leachman, Jr., who was killed in a car accident in 1940 at the age of eighteen. Cloris was educated at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. She later attended Northwestern University, where she studied drama.

Leachman made her stage debut in 1945 in a production of Harvey. She made her film debut in 1947 in The Farmer’s Daughter. Her performance in that film earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to appear in such films as The Trouble with Harry (1955), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Young Frankenstein (1974), and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993).

On television, Leachman is best known for her role as Phyllis Lindstrom on the CBS sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977), for which she won two Emmy Awards. She also appeared as a regular on the PBS children’s series The Electric Company (1971–1977).

Leachman has been married four times. Her first husband was George Englund, with whom she had two sons: George Englund Jr. and Morgan Englund. She was married to actor Robert Lewis Shaye from 1984 to 1987. She has been married to actor George Gaynes since 1988.
