Catherine Martin is an Australian costume designer, production designer, and film producer. She is best known for her work on the films The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge!, for which she won two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, respectively.
Born in Sydney, Australia, Martin is the daughter of a doctor and a nurse. She has two older sisters. Martin’s parents encouraged her to pursue her interests in art and design, and she attended the prestigious Sydney Girls High School. After graduation, she studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where she met her future husband, director Baz Luhrmann.
Martin’s career began in the 1980s as a costume designer for Australian television commercials and music videos. She made her feature film debut as a costume designer on Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom (1992). She has since worked with Luhrmann on a number of other films, including Romeo + Juliet (1996), Moulin Rouge! (2001), and The Great Gatsby (2013).
In addition to her work as a costume designer, Martin has also served as a production designer on several films, including The Great Gatsby and The Aviator (2004). She has also produced several films, including Australia (2008) and The Great Gatsby (2013).
Martin has been married to Baz Luhrmann since 1997. They have two children together.
