Caroline Kennedy is an American author, attorney, and diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Japan from 2013 to 2017. She is a member of the Kennedy family and the only surviving child of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
Born in New York City on November 27, 1957, Caroline Kennedy is the daughter of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. She has an older brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., who died in a plane crash in 1999, and a younger sister, Arabella Kennedy, who died shortly after birth. Caroline Kennedy was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1979.
Kennedy began her career as a lawyer in the New York City office of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. In 1988, she joined the faculty of Columbia Law School, where she taught courses on negotiation and legal ethics. In 2002, Kennedy published a best-selling book on constitutional law, The Right to Privacy.
In 2009, Kennedy endorsed Barack Obama for president and campaigned for him across the country. After Obama was elected, she was considered for the position of United States ambassador to Japan. In 2013, she was nominated for the post and confirmed by the Senate. Kennedy served as ambassador until 2017, when she resigned to return to private life.
Kennedy has been married twice. Her first husband was Michael LeMoyne Kennedy, with whom she had two children: Rose Kennedy Schlossberg and Tatiana Celia Kennedy Schlossberg. Her second husband is Edwin Arthur Schlossberg, with whom she has three children: John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg, Caroline Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg, and Edward Mookey Schlossberg.
